Partners Bios
Nelson Halpern is a Chartered Professional Accountant who received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at the University of Calgary. He has thirty-two years of experience in public accounting, with nine years at Price Waterhouse in Calgary where he worked in the audit group and later the tax group. He has completed the CICA in-depth tax course and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, the Entrepreneurial CAs of Calgary and the Canadian Tax Foundation. He received his “TEP” designation from the Society of Tax and Estate Practitioners in 2002. Nelson has been a volunteer with various not-for-profit organizations and is a past president of the House of Jacob synagogue, a past president of the Akiva Academy day school and has been a director of the Calgary Jewish Community Council board since 1985 where he has chaired and served on numerous committees and is a past president. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta in 2005 and received an “FCA” designation as a Fellow Chartered Accountant in 2013 for his contribution to his community and the profession. He was also the honoree at the Akiva Academy day school annual dinner in 2010 and B’nai Brith annual dinner in 2012.
Elizabeth Marshall is a Chartered Professional Accountant who received her Bachelor of Commerce degree from Concordia University in Montreal. She has ten years experience in public practice as well as eighteen years in various accounting and financial reporting positions including thirteen years in the oil and gas industry. She has been working at Kahn Halpern Marshall Chartered Accounts for seven years and became a partner effective December 1, 2008. Elizabeth has been a volunteer with various not-for-profit organizations. She has attended various CICA professional development courses including the income tax practice course and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta.
Stephen Kahn is a Chartered Professional Accountant who received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Concordia University in Montreal. He has fifty-three years of experience in public accounting. Initially he worked for three accounting firms in Montreal and then formed his own partnership in Montreal which ran from 1969 until 1978. He moved to Calgary in June of 1978 where he started his own professional corporation. On January 1, 1997, he went into partnership with Kahn Halpern Shikaze Chartered Accountants. Effective December 1, 2001, the partnership changed its name to Kahn Halpern Marshall Chartered Accountants. As a former Montrealer, Stephen has extensive experience in the clothing trade as well as the import export field. Stephen is a member of the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Quebec, Ontario and Alberta.
